Support groups
Some local charities offer regular parent support groups where you can talk to other parents or carers of children and young people with additional support needs. These are normally informal sessions with no set agenda; people may ask for advice on a particular situation or just sit and listen, or talk about things entirely unrelated to their caring role.
As we announced at the AGM, we are currently developing the PlayPeace Pod in our office which we hope will be a space for parents and carers to come and relax, use our office facilities, make use of our book and gift exchange, and also speak to other parents. We will share more details of this as it develops.
- Community Learning and Development (CLD): this service is provided by North Lanarkshire Council which is structured across 5 delivery teams: Adult Learning, Youth Work, Family Learning, Resettlement and Learning and Improvement. The teams work together to improve outcomes for children, young people, adults, and families through learning, and also run a series of workshops and youth groups. Many areas run parent support groups. If you wish to access the CLD service you should first ask your school if they have a CLD worker they can refer you to. If they don’t, or your child doesn’t attend school then the Family Learning Manager is Lesley Inglis (Inglisl@northlan.gov.uk).
- Hope for Autism: run weekly and fortnightly and monthly support groups in a wide range of locations across Lanarkshire. The monthly group is online via Zoom on the last Tuesday of the month, 7.00-8.30pm. Membership is not required to attend.
